Our scholarship holders and candidates
We are currently supporting four young women on their educational journeys through our scholarship program.
Starting in September/October 2025, we will welcome seven additional women into the program. For at least two nursing students, we are still looking for sponsors willing to fund a partial scholarship (from €20 per month) or a full scholarship (€100 per month). For Azizah, who is studying Environmental Health at the University of Tamale, we are also seeking a sponsor for a €40 monthly scholarship.
This page gives you a chance to meet our scholarship holders.
Our second-year scholarship holders
We are very pleased that all three young women have successfully completed their first year. Mathilda has already taken her final examination.
Juliana
After completing Senior High School, Juliana worked for several years as a kayayo in Accra. She comes from a small village near Walewale in northern Ghana and is one of 13 siblings.
In the 2022/23 school year, she was able - thanks to financial support from our scholarship program—to repeat her final year of school in order to improve her grades and meet the entry requirements for professional training.
Since September 2024, she has been attending the Nursing College in Walewale, close to her home village.
Lateefa
Lateefa comes from the town of Pusiga in the Upper East Region. She is the mother of an eight-year-old daughter, who is currently being cared for by her grandmother.
Lateefa herself did not grow up with her parents – at the age of three, she was placed in a foster family. Despite many challenges, she successfully completed her Senior High School.
With support from our scholarship program, she was able to begin midwifery training in 2024 and started her second year at college in mid-September.
Mathilda
After completing her Senior High School, Mathilda worked for several years in Accra as a Kayayo. She is an half-orphan and lives with her mother and brother near Walewale in northern Ghana.
In autumn 2023, she began training as a nursing assistant at the Training College in Navrongo. At the end of September, she completed her final exam and is now waiting for the results. If she passes with sufficient grades, she will be able to apply for a bachelor’s degree program.
Mary
Mary comes from Navrongo in the Upper West Region. She is a bright and intelligent young woman who achieved excellent results in Senior High School (SHS), despite challenging learning conditions.
After completing her studies, she worked for a year as a Kayayo. At the last minute, she secured one of the coveted places for the three-year midwifery program at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Sunyani.
Since mid-September, she has been in her third semester.
Our candidates to start September 2025
In autumn 2025, we are able to support additional young women from economically disadvantaged families in starting their training in nursing or midwifery. We are even able to support one particularly talented young woman with a scholarship for university.
In March and December 2024, we spoke with young women in Accra who work as Kayaye in the markets. These conversations focused primarily on their career aspirations and future prospects. Two candidates met the requirements, and we were able to welcome them as scholarship holders.
At the end of May 2025, we personally met and interviewed additional applicants during a trip to Northern Ghana. Together with our local partner organisation, we have now equipped these young women and enabled them to start their training at three different colleges in Northern Ghana.
Aisha comes from Kunkwa in the North Eastern Region of Ghana. She has applied for the two-year training program to become a nursing assistant.
| Zuwera comes from the North Eastern Region of Ghana. We met her in December 2024 in Accra, where she has been working as a Kayayo in the markets for several years.

After completing her Senior High School, Radiatu has been working as a Kayayo in Kumasi. Thanks to her excellent school-leaving certificate, she received an offer to attend the College for Nursing & Midwifery in Kubori and began her first year in mid-September. | Belaw worked as a Kayayo in Kumasi until the end of July. She earned an outstanding school-leaving certificate. Her great wish is now coming true: she received an offer for September at the College for Nursing & Midwifery in Walewale and has successfully started her studies.
Zuleha comes from the village of Boamasa in the Northern Region and has many siblings. She worked as a Kayayo in Kumasi. She received an offer to attend the College for Nursing & Midwifery in Kubori and began her first year in mid-September. | Azizah has been admitted to a four-year Environmental Health program at the University of Development Studies in Tamale. Recently, her mother, who had financially supported her through her Senior High School, passed away. She also has several younger siblings. Without our support, Azizah would have had to give up her studies to provide for her family as the eldest child, working as a Kayayo. We are therefore grateful to be able to support her during her first year at university.
Asana comes from Zinindo in the Gushiegu District and has many siblings. In December 2024, we had the opportunity to meet her family in person. Asana is very determined and is one of the few women from her village to have completed her Senior High School. Since October, she has been attending the Nursing College in Tamale, undertaking the two-year training program to become a nursing assistant. | Jennifer and Arishetu both come from the Gushiegu District, from neighboring villages. Each of them worked for several years as a Kayayo in Accra. They both applied for a nursing assistant training program. Unfortunately, they were not able to start in autumn 2025. We are now supporting them in repeating their Senior High School final exams so that they can try again next year.
